My grandfather, Dr. Henry Richard Herrera, passed away last Thursday due to COVID. Hank lit up my life with his infectious humor and his unwavering spirit; but it was his constant focus and commitment to social justice that inspires me. I wanted to share two relevant memories that are foremost in my mind at this time, and why he meant so much to me.
In 2015, my first semester at Cal, he was “evicted” from the UC Gill Tract Community Farm by UCPD at the break of dawn, as he prayed on the land and for our ancestors. I put “evicted” in quotes because he was vehemently opposed to the idea that he could be evicted, at all. Indeed, he is captured on video saying “This land is native land, it’s Ohlone Land. [Ohlone people] cannot trespass on our land… where we lived for 10,000 years” That moment left a lasting impression on me as an Ohlone person, as did his lifelong commitment to community organizing and the elimination of food poverty.
