When I first got asked to do this year’s Richmond Folk Festival poster, it was right at the very beginning of lockdown, and during a time when we “assumed” we’d still be preparing for a physical concert by the time September and October rolled around. Obviously, that was not the case. Maybe a month after initially getting the project, Stephen Lecky, with Venture Richmond, informed me the festival was shifting from an outdoor concert to a virtual one amidst the pandemic. With that news, it meant the poster design needed to change, too. I was no longer designing for what an outdoor event might look and feel like, but instead what a socially distanced concert might entail. Everything has shifted to screens and the need to really lean on technology to be able to connect with one another during this time, so I wanted the poster to reflect that.
