Crabgrass and other pesky summer annuals can pop up mid-season, even with an effective pre-emergent application. Crabgrass can break through in areas that are weaker or thin of good grass. Reasons for this thinning can include: drought stress, disease, or high foot traffic. Mid-season is the prime time to control crabgrass post-emergence. Younger crabgrass plants are easier to control than older ones. If you wait to treat until the crabgrass is more visible, it will require higher herbicide rates, increase the risk of damage to the desired grass, and decrease the effectiveness of the control.
