This weekend we have had the privilege of playing as an alternative identity: the Lexington Hustlers. The Lexington Hustlers were owned and operated entirely by African Americans. This professional baseball club welcomed players from all racial backgrounds becoming the first Negro League team in the south to integrate in 1947. From 1945 to 1952, baseball fans gathered at Bluegrass Athletic Field off Newtown Pike to watch the Hustlers play. The Hustlers were led by local players such as "Scoop" Brown, Lou Johnson and Bobby Flynn. As an independent team, the Hustlers played exhibition games against some of the game's greatest names like Satchel Paige, Henry Aaron and Willie Mays. To be able to take the field as this identity on Juneteenth is something incredible and we hope you’ll find it as special as we do.
