The Tempe City Council is now among the most diverse city councils in Maricopa County, if not the Southwest. "Tempe is known to be a city that welcomes diversity and inclusion. The results of this election are one more proof point to that. Right now, we are setting the example nationally that diverse cities are successful cities, and we are giving our children role models," said former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuilano, the first directly-elected openly gay mayor in the country.
