“As a first-generation Sierra Leonean American, there has always been an emphasis on community involvement growing up. However, I did not truly appreciate the importance of community support until I realized how much my community outside of school and my newfound one at Rutgers impacted my college experience.
As a Black Muslim woman who wears the hijab, it is rare to see others who look like me in my path to pursuing a career in healthcare. Finding a community of underrepresented students through ODASIS and MAPS allowed me to be surrounded by peers who I can resonate with and are a source of support in and out of the classroom.
