In this week’s installment of Masked and Answered, Valerie Kraft, a triple major in Psychology; Medicine, Health, and Society; and Gender and Sexuality Studies, shares her pandemic experience as a student with invisible illnesses:
“I decided to stay home this semester because I have multiple chronic illnesses. They’re all invisible illnesses, so they're not anything that you could discern just from looking at me. And I think one of the things that has been so frustrating about this pandemic is the continued idea that only the elderly will die, or only the vulnerable will get really sick. Not only is that an ableist and ageist thing to say, but you also have no way of really knowing who belongs to those categories. Just by looking at me, no one would think that I am someone who is extremely high risk, but I am. And so I think it’s important to mask up, not only to be a compassionate person to the people around you and to lessen the strain on healthcare workers, but you also never know ...
